Are you an experienced Specification Technologist looking for a varied role where you can take ownership of retailer specifications, artwork and regulatory compliance?
This is an exciting opportunity for a Specification Technologist to join an established food business in Peterborough, taking responsibility for technical and regulatory documentation across both branded and own-label products. You’ll work closely with Technical, NPD, Quality, Commercial and Marketing teams, as well as customers, ensuring specifications and product information remain accurate, compliant and up to date.
The role offers plenty of variety beyond specification writing, with involvement in artwork approval, nutritional information, claims, customer portals and the wider NPD process from concept through to launch. You’ll also act as a key point of contact for technical queries and help ensure products continue to meet retailer, legal and food safety requirements.
You will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Creating and maintaining accurate product specifications for retail customers.
- Managing retailer specification systems and customer portals.
- Reviewing and approving artwork for own-label and private-label products.
- Reviewing pack copy and specifications for branded products.
- Reviewing nutritional information and providing feedback to the NPD team.
- Reviewing product claims and marketing content to ensure regulatory compliance and accuracy.
- Supporting NPD projects through the stage-gate process from concept through to launch.
- Maintaining specification databases, matrices and associated technical documentation.
- Ensuring specifications are updated following product, ingredient or process changes.
- Reviewing finished product testing results and escalating any out-of-specification results.
- Supporting investigations into customer specification, artwork and product compliance issues.
- Responding to customer alerts and technical queries accurately and within required timescales.
- Supporting customer, third-party and regulatory audits where required.
- Ensuring documentation remains controlled, traceable and audit-ready.
What’s required?
- Previous experience within a Specifications Technologist, Technical or similar role in the food industry.
- Experience creating and maintaining retailer and customer specifications.
- Good knowledge of food labelling legislation, allergens, nutritional information and product claims.
- An understanding of food safety and quality standards including HACCP, GMP and BRCGS.
- Experience using retailer specification systems, databases and customer portals.
- An understanding of retailer and customer codes of practice.
- Strong attention to detail and confidence interpreting technical and regulatory information.
- Excellent written communication and data management skills.
- Strong organisation and time management, with the ability to work accurately to tight deadlines.
- A collaborative approach with the ability to work across NPD, Quality, Technical, Commercial and Marketing teams.
- A proactive approach to identifying discrepancies, managing compliance risks and improving processes.
What’s in it for you?
